Companies are organizations doing business as corporations, partnerships, or sole proprietorships. They can be categorized as public or private, or a parent or subsidiary/division.

Companies that sell securities to the public and meet certain size thresholds must file disclosure documents with regulatory bodies such as the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC); these companies are said to be publicly-held. Parent companies may own subsidiaries, which are separate legal organizations, and be divided into divisions.
