Parenthetical Citation when Page Numbers are Absent

Citing the Entire Work

Preferable to include the author in the text rather than use ( ).  Smith's Wealth of Nations includes...  or (Smith).  (MLA Handbook 220)

No page numbers, Paragraphs numbered

Give the paragraph number preceded by the abbreviation par. or pars.  If the authors name begins the citation, put a comma after the name. (MLA Handbook 221)
Example: (Myers, par. 5)    OR     (Myers and Briggs, pars. 5-8)

No page numbers, No visible paragraph numbers , Sections numbered

Give the section number after the abbreviation sec.  If the authors name begins the citation, put a comma after the name. (MLA Handbook 221)

Example: (Johnston, sec. 2)
