MATH 3640 / 5640 - History of Mathematics - Haack & Riehl

Guide to locating writings on the history of math in books and journals.

OneSearch (Rod Library Catalog)

Keyword search : finds items by, about, and mentioning your mathematician in the item description (or entire source in some cases).

  • "Author/creator" search = finds items by/about your mathematician. Can use official name versions as described in Subject search below.

  • "Subject" search = finds items officially described (tagged) by a librarian as being about your mathematician. Uses 1 official version of each person's name, which often includes birth & death dates to differentiate them from anyone else with the same name. Can add additional information to narrow results. (ex. Blaise Pascal 1623-1662 -- Letters).

Search Tips

  • For a OneSearch keyword search, order of the mathematician's name doesn't matter. Order only matters if you do an exact phrase search using quotation marks.
  • Consider variant spellings of your mathematician's name. And note that library systems and U.S. keyboards don't always know how to use accent marks, so leave them out.
  • In the Books/Media catalog basic search, you can limit by Language in the left sidebar after you see results. You can limit before you search using the Advanced Search.
  • For reserve items, inquire at the Library Services Desk (main floor near east entrance). For most other items, A-K call numbers are on the 3rd floor and L-Z call numbers are on the 4th floor. Maps are provided on each floor near the main stairway.
