Construction of Search Terms

*  wildcard character ("truncation")            vietnam* retrieves Vietnam, Vietnam’s, Vietnamese 

or any of the words can be present            map* or atlas* or chart*
                                                                           North Vietnamese Army or NVA or People’s Army of Vietnam

and  all words need to be present              My Lai and Calley

OneSearch! Search Tips

OneSearch! for information – books, magazine articles, scholarly journal articles, newspaper articles, videos, and more.  

Increase the relevance of your OneSearch! search results by the ways you enter your search terms: 

     Use  quotation marks around your multi-word search phrases  –  “vietnam war”    

     Use Advanced Search to and in additional search terms

                 Consider using or within each Advanced Search window 

Select your information source type –  books, magazines, academic journals, or other specific types of publication –  by using Source Types 

Increase the likelihood the articles you use are from scholarly, academic journals – by using  

       Limit To and choosing Scholarly (Peer Reviewed)  

Choose government documents – by using Advanced SearchBooks/Media – type your topic, Search.  Then scroll down to see on the left side of the screen Refine My Results.  Choose as Location those starting with UNI Documents. 

Google Search Tips

When searching Google, use the following domain name extensions in your search phrase        to retrieve information on U.S. national and state government agency Websites         to retrieve information on U.S. military Websites

Google Scholar Settings

To learn whether Rod Library at the University of Northern Iowa (or your home institution) owns the publications you find in, set your computer's settings as follows:

1. Access

2. Click on Image result for cog imageSettings

3. Click on Library links

4. Search and checkmark the libraries of interest (see the following example)


Show library access links for (choose up to five libraries):
