Advanced Google Searching

Limit by domain name to see results only from .org sites or .gov sites.  Example: Iowa healthcare

Add the word statistics to your search terms if that's what you need.

Add + before a word to force Google to include it (note there is not a space after +). Example: healthcare +statistics

Limit to government sites for statistics. Example: healthcare cost

Use quotation marks to search for logical phrases. Example: healthcare "economic impact"

Types of Articles

Questions to Consider:

  1. What are the authors' credentials?
  2. In what publication did the article appear?
  3. What is the article's research question/main purpose?
  4. What data source(s) did the author use?

Common article types (not exhaustive):

  • Empirical:
    Also called "research article"; based on observable evidence that can be quantitative, qualitative, or mixed methods
  • Case Study:
    Details 1 example or a few examples.
  • Review:
    Discusses many other articles on the same topic. Systematic and meta-analytic reviews are particular types that follow prescribed procedures.
  • Theoretical:
    Also called "conceptual"; proposes a theory or conceptual framework on a topic
