Advanced Google Books Search

There are several advantages to using the Advanced Google Books search option.  All of them allow for you to refine your search and improve the quality of results you retrieve.  The ones highlighted below are the common ones the library guys @ UNI use:

Limited Preview and Full View:

• Use this feature to only bring back results that provide you with a limited preview or full view.  If you book is a limited preview, you may see all you need to know from that source to use it in your assignment.  If not, there's an additional feature called "Find in a library" where you can see if we own it to view the full text.

Find results....with all of the words:

• Use this feature for almost all of your searching, unless you have another preference.

Find results....with the exact phrase:

• This feature is nice to use in combination with the feature above for when you have a common keyword search but you want to limit it to a certain subject area.  For example, in the search above, I wanted to know more about ALS.  Since ALS covers a wide variety of areas, I wanted to limit it to ALS and speech disorders.

Book Preview & Getting the Print Version

Once you have found a book that fits your researching needs and you go into that book via Google Books, you have an option to see if we have that book in print at the Rod Library.

Get this book in print and/or Find in a library feature:

• By clicking this feature, you are sent to WorldCat (A large library network where you can access a variety of different materials and see which libraries near you own them or which other libraries you can get the materials through).  Here you can see if the Rod Library owns this book.  If we do, you can click on our library and go to the record to see it's location.  If we do not, you can still try to get this title.  To receive materials that Rod Library does not own, you can use Interlibrary Loan.

Search box feature:

• You can search within this book by using the search box located on the left hand side of the page.  This would allow you to look for key phrases or search terms within the topic this book covers.  The key search terms would then be highlighted throughout the text.

Search Google Books

For a more refined search, use the Advanced Google Books search.

Full Text Available

Books that were published in 1923 or before are available in full text through Google Books as these materials are out of copyright. 

View Portions of Books

Only portions of books newer than 1923 can be viewed in Google Books due to copyright. 

However, you may find that those portions are all you need to use that source or if you'd like to see book in its entirety, there is another option as well under "Find in a library" feature.

View Popular Magazines

There are some popular magazines that are searchable through Google Books.  

To limit your search to magazines, select the "Magazines" tab in the Advanced Google Books Search.  

You can also search several issues within the same magazine by going to "About this magazine" and selecting "Browse all issues."
