Variations on Favorite Stories

This LibGuide highlights Youth resources that tell and retell classic fairy tales, folk tales, myths, etc.

Introduction

This guide collects retellings, reimaginations, and "fractured" fairy tale stories. It's still a work in progress--if there are other tales you'd like to see featured, please let us know!

All of the books on these lists are in the Youth Collection of UNI's Rod Library.

In our collection, most fairy tales and other traditional literature are shelved under the call number Y 398. However, some variations might be found in the picture book (YE) or full-length fiction (Y) collections, or even in places like poetry (Y 821)!

There are now two traditional literature collections:

  • Books in Y 398 or UNI Youth (Y 398) are shelved with the other nonfiction, in the tall shelves by the Youth Services desk.
  • Books in Historical Y 398 or UNI Youth Hist (Y 398) are shelved in the Historical Collection, in the back corner between picture books and biographies. Please ask for assistance using or checking out these books.

Clicking on a book will take you to its record in our library catalog, where you can see whether it's available or checked out.

If you find additional titles in the Youth Collection that belong on these lists, feel free to make suggestions to libyouth@uni.edu
