Researching Iowa History

Welcome to the Iowa History research guide! This guide collects introductory resources about Iowa history from Rod Library and beyond. Whether you're curious about agriculture, politics, rural schools, or any other Iowa-related topic, this guide will help you learn more about our state.

What's on this guide?

  • The Books & Journals page contains general reference books and Iowa history periodicals.
  • The Newspapers page links to digitized copies of historic Iowa newspapers, campus newspapers, and yearbooks.
  • The Archives page lists both digital and in-person archives related to Iowa history. Some types of content preserved in these archives include letters, oral histories, photographs, and film.
  • Under the Census Data tab, you can find links to historical census data from both the Iowa Census and the U.S. Census.
  • For UNI students, faculty, and staff: If you find something you want to read but UNI does not provide access to it, the Interlibrary Loan tab provides detailed instructions for how to have the item electronically delivered to you for free.
