ENGLISH 1005 - College Writing and Research

This guide will help you locate topics of information and provide you with suggestions on where and how to search.

Find a Topic

There are many ways to generate topics for an assignment if you are still unsure after reviewing the assignment:

  • Meet with your professor. They can help you generate, develop, and provide examples of suitable topics.
  • Chat with your classmates. What are they considering? Brainstorm together to generate ideas.
  • Think about what you are studying in other classes. Are there ways to relate or intersect ideas?
  • Brainstorm! Create a mind map of keywords, ideas, items, subjects, and questions you have about the topic.
  • Browse! Look at news articles, textbooks, and reference materials (e.g. encyclopedias, dictionaries, and almanacs).
