Graduate College Formatting Guide

Information on how to meet the Graduate College thesis and dissertation formatting requirements as outlined in the Thesis & Dissertation Manual.

Front Matter Page Numbers

Google Docs does not currently support the use of Roman Numerals for page numbers. Please omit the page numbers in the front matter if you will be working in Google Docs. The Graduate College reviewer will assist with placing page numbers on your final copy.

Inserting Page Numbers in the Body

Google does does support having section breaks and restarting page numbering between sections. You will need to ensure a section break is placed at the bottom of the last page of your front matter. To view the non-printing characters to confirm that the section break has been inserted, click on View > show non-printing characters.

On the first page of the body of the work, double click on the header area and ensure that "Link to Previous" is not selected.

Once this has been done, you can go to insert, page numbers, and select to insert them in the top right.
