How to find fiction materials using Dewey Decimal (Youth Materials)

Example of a youth book in the catalog

Many public and school libraries use the Dewey Decimal System to organize their collections. We use it for the Youth and IRTS collections.

1. Re-arrange the call number in vertical format (as it will appear on the book spine).

Y

ROW

2. Look at the location. Y denotes the book is located in Youth Fiction.

How to find non-fiction materials using Dewey Decimal (Youth Materials)

A sample record with the call number highlighted

1. Re-arrange the call number in vertical format (as it will appear on the book spine).

Y

745

B

2. Look at the location. 745 is the classification number. The letter on the last line usually refers to the first initial of the author's last name.

3. Some Dewey numbers will have numbers after the decimal point, like 398.12. Remember that "Nothing comes before something" with decimals.  Here are some numbers in correct order: 398, 398.1, 398.12, 398.2.
