For a long time, seeking out LGBTQ+ characters in fiction meant accepting that they were likely to die--whether from violence, suicide, or AIDS-related illnesses--or at least have a brush with death. As you're exploring LGBTQ+ books and building a collection for your students, make sure you're balancing tragic stories with more optimistic, everyday stories.
