Where Do You Find Government Information?

Library OneSearch Tab

  • The library OneSearch tab can be found on the middle of the library homepage.
  • More effective and efficient searches are done by using the Advanced Search, and limiting by location to UNI Documents.

Library Databases

Government Websites

  • Unless you have a particular government department in mind, the best way to find them on a topic is to use Google using the site:.gov command.

How To Find Sources Using Library Catalog

Government Sources via Library Books/Media Tab

Once you have search results, limit by location to UNI Documents which is located on the right-hand side of the page.

The library has both print (physical documents) and electronic government documents.

Find Government Websites Using site:.gov

Government Sources via Google

In Google, you can limit to type of website (.gov).  This is a powerful way to search for government websites.

If the government department is unknown, use site:.gov in your searching.

This search limits results to local, state, and federal government sites.

You can also search an entire government site for information using the site: command.

For example, to search the EPA for information about water, you would type in the following:

water  site:.epa.gov

Note: There are no spaces for the site:. command.  Additionally, the word or phrase you are searching needs to be immediately adjacent to the site: command.
