How to Use Microfilm at Rod Library

Microfilm is a way to view historical newspapers, such as the Waterloo Courier, on small rolled film. This guide will help you locate and use microfilm at Rod Library, as well as options for finding older or missing issues

Step 1: Go to the Microfilm Area

The microfilm collection is located on the first floor of Rod Library, in the northwest corner.

Step 2: Locate the Waterloo Courier Microfilm 

The microfilm cabinets are organized alphabetically. Search for the Waterloo Courier and identify the reel(s) corresponding to the date(s) or issue(s) you want to view.

Step 3: Mount the Reel on the Microfilm Reader

Visit the microfilm scanners along the north wall near the microfilm cabinets. If you need help, visit the Library Services Desk on the main floor. You can also consult the STimaging Quick Start Guide, located between the computer and the scanner.

Step 4: View, Save, or Print Pages

Open PerfectView on the computer. After locating the article, you can view it on-screen, save it, print it, or email it to yourself. You can also consult the PerfectView User Guide to learn more.

Step 5: Return the Microfilm 

After rewinding the microfilm, return it to its box and place it in the Please Return Microfilm tray on top of the microfilm cabinets, or bring it to the Library Services Desk

Locate Older or Missing Issues

If the article you’re looking for isn’t in our microfilm collection, try one of these options:
