Creative Nonfiction Workshop

In this class, you are exploring writing creative nonfiction that tells of your personal experiences while drawing connections to the universal (or at least ubiquitous). One tactic for writing effective personal narrative is to infuse research, which can take many forms!

This guide offers some entry points to doing this work.

Strategies and Resources for Researching

Strategies

  1. Brainstorm areas of your narrative that might be enhanced from research. There is no need for research for research's sake.
  2. Consider the goals of different source types to determine which might be best for the angle you seek.
  3. Think about your topic from broad to narrow. The entry point for (and availability of) research differs for each level.
  4. Your goal is a Goldilocks search: not too big, not too small, just right.
  5. Meet (or accept) the challenges that inevitably come.
