    First Newspaper in Iowa

The first newspaper in Iowa was The Dubuque Visitor, established in 1836 before Iowa was a state.   The current Dubuque paper, the Telegraph Herald, can trace its history back to the Visitor.

Pages from the first issue of the Visitor are reproduced in the book The Pageant of the Press: a Survey of 125 Years of Iowa Journalism 1836-1961.   Click the second link below to see the library catalog record for this book, a copy of which is in the UNI Stacks.

Compiled by Robert D. Greenlee, this book includes a history of the Dubuque Visitor and also an overview discussing "Iowa's Other Territorial Papers."
    • The Pageant of the Press; a Survey of 125 Years of Iowa Journalism, 1836-1961

Starts with a history of The Dubuque Visitor written by William J. Petersen, followed by reproductions of pages from the first issue of the Visitor from May 11, 1836. The rest of the book consists of reproductions of pages from many other early Iowa newspapers.
