Scholarly Communication: Information and Resources for the UNI Community

UNI Support for Publishing Open Access (OA)

UNI provides several programs to assist researchers with publishing Open Access (free to readers). This includes guidance on determining publishing venues, support for evaluating journals, and several funding options.

Why should I publish Open Access? Publishing your work Open Access means increased readership, increased citation rates, flexibility with author rights, and, sometimes, compliance with federal and/or funding agency requirements.

Are Open Access journals high-quality? Often, yes. Many major publishers have Open Access publishing models for some journals. Examples include Taylor & Francis, Elsevier, Wiley, and others.  As with any publication venue, it is important to assess quality. Find out more about measures of journal quality as well as avoiding predatory publishers on the library guide Where to Publish.

Article Processing Charges

What are Article Processing Charges (APCs)? Some, but not all, publishers may charge authors a fee in order to publish their work Open Access.

Do all journals/publishers charge APCs for publishing Open Access? No. There are many forms of Open Access, including Diamond Open Access which incurs no charges for both readers and authors.

How much are APCs? There is wide variation across disciplines in whether APCs are charged as well as how much they cost.

Who can help UNI researchers with paying APCs? If a publisher is charging an APC, there are several library- and Provost-coordinated programs that may be able to assist with fees. See the library Open Access Publishing webpage for more information.

Are journals that charge APCs high-quality? Often, yes. Many major publishers use the APC model to fund Open Access publishing. Examples include Taylor & Francis, Elsevier, Wiley, and others.  As with any publication venue, it is important to assess quality. Find out more about measures of journal quality as well as avoiding predatory publishers on the library guide Where to Publish.
