Graduate College Formatting Guide

Information on how to meet the Graduate College thesis and dissertation formatting requirements as outlined in the Thesis & Dissertation Manual.

Special Materials

If you have materials included in your thesis/dissertation that are larger than the standard 8.5x11" page size, please email kathryn.wohlpart@uni.edu for guidance.

Creating a landscape page

Landscape pages can be made by changing the orientation of an existing page. For instance, if you have a wide graph that would fit better on a landscape page than a portrait page, you can start by inserting this figure into the page.

Then, at the end of the page preceding your first desired landscape page, insert a section break (next page) in the Layout tab.

The first page number in this new section might change to 1. We will fix this later. For now, go to the end of your desired landscape section and insert another section break (new page). That way, the orientation of these pages will remain separate from the rest. For our example, we will only use one page.

Make sure that your text cursor is inside the section you want to be landscape. Then, in the Layout tab, click Orientation, then Landscape.

Your page should now be oriented in the landscape format.

Please take note that all figures and tables included on landscape pages should still be within the margins, no larger than nine inches. To set the absolute size of an object, right click on it, then select Size and Position...

Set the absolute width to 9", then your figure will be set.

Formatting the Landscape page

You may notice that the page numbers of your landscape pages are still in the top right of the screen. We will need to adjust these to make sure they're correct and within the margins. First, double click in the header to edit it. It should open a new tab at the top of your screen titled Design.

The Design tab

Delete the existing page numbers, deselect the option "Link to Previous" if it's selected, then insert new numbers at the right border:

An oversized page number should appear.

Change the font to 12 point Times New Roman. Then click on the Format tab at the top of the page and adjust the size of the text box to match the paper size (8.5 tall, 11 wide).

Changing the text box size

Change the text direction to Rotate all text 90°.
