Module 7: Reference Interview

In this module, you will learn how to perform an effective reference interview to discover and fulfill a patron's information need. 

After completing this module, you will be able to: 

  • Recognize, describe, and practice the steps of an effective reference interview: Be Approachable, Show Interest, Listen & Inquire, Search, and Follow-up.

Directions:

  • How have your previous experiences with patrons shaped your understanding of the importance of conducting reference interviews?
  • In what ways can the techniques you learned enhance a patron's library experience? 
  • What strategies would you use to overcome common challenges in conducting reference interviews, such as vague questions or miscommunication?
