Module 7: Reference Interview

In this module, you will learn how to perform an effective reference interview to discover and fulfill a patron's information need. 

After completing this module, you will be able to: 

  • Recognize, describe, and practice the steps of an effective reference interview: Be Approachable, Show Interest, Listen & Inquire, Search, and Follow-up.

Reflect on the following questions and write a brief response: 

  • Think about a time you helped someone find information—maybe a classmate, friend, or library patron. How might using the five steps of the reference interview have made that interaction easier or more effective?
  • In what ways do you think a good reference interview can help patrons feel more confident and independent in their research?
