Module 7: Reference Interview

In this module, you will learn how to perform an effective reference interview to discover and fulfill a patron's information need. 

After completing this module, you will be able to: 

  • Recognize, describe, and practice the steps of an effective reference interview: Be Approachable, Show Interest, Listen & Inquire, Search, and Follow-up.

Reflect on the following questions and write a brief response: 

  • Why do you think we follow the steps of the reference interview to respond to a patron's information need?
  • What do you think is the most important step of the reference interview? 
  • How can you use the reference interview to make your reference transactions successful?
