Module 4: Scholarly Articles

Now you have the tools to find background information on a topic and gather keywords. In this module, you will learn how to find and access scholarly articles in OneSearch and Google Scholar.

After completing this module, you will be able to:

  • identify sections in a scholarly article and their purpose (abstract, introduction, methods, results, discussion, conclusion, and references).
  • recall common names for scholarly articles (also called peer-reviewed, research, academic, and refereed articles).
  • use limiters to narrow your search results to scholarly articles in OneSearch.
  • determine the availability of an online and/or physical version of a scholarly article in OneSearch.
  • retrieve generated citations (APA, MLA, Chicago, and Harvard) and permalinks for stable access and sharing in OneSearch.
  • discover and access known and topic-based scholarly articles (also called peer-reviewed articles or research articles) in Google Scholar.
  • find generated citations (APA, MLA, Chicago, Harvard), articles cited in a known article, and related articles in Google Scholar.
  • craft customized searches using Google Commands in Google Scholar.

Scholarly Articles

During your time at UNI, you will likely have several research assignments requiring one or more scholarly articles.

Scholarly articles are written by experts (e.g., your professors) for other experts in a particular field.

Scholarly articles are often peer-reviewed, where an editorial team asks other experts in the particular field to review and evaluate the article before the article is published in a scholarly journal (e.g., Journal of Interactive Marketing or American Journal of Education).

Other common names for scholarly articles include:

  • academic articles,
  • peer-reviewed articles,
  • research articles,
  • and refereed articles.

Anatomy of a Scholarly Article

Directions:

This week, we will find a scholarly article in OneSearch using one or more keywords from a discussion post in the Module 3 Padlet. You may use your own post or another student's discussion post.

In your discussion post, include:

  1. Your name and unit in the Title section.
  2. Your search terms in the Body section.
  3. A brief explanation your search steps in the Body section (e.g., what limiters did you use?).
  4. A permalink to your article using the link option in Padlet (step-by-step instructions).
